Day Three of the Dante Festival has arrived and there is a decent card awaiting those still trying hard to end the meeting in profit. Fury was a courageous winner on Day Two and happily backed early by myself at 13-2 (3-1SP) to make it an acceptable afternoon. I am hoping for an improvement further still on Friday with the highlight on the card being the Sportingbet Yorkshire Cup (Group 2).
There is clearly still room for improvement and I hope I can end the three day betting experience on a high with one or two enterprising, value selections.
Just two races that I feel able to give value opinion towards, on this final day of the meeting, at York.
2.30 - Sportingbet Yorkshire Cup (Group 2) 1m 6f
I am not enthused by the entries in this contest for whatever reason and Red Cadeaux looks a skimpy priced favourite, considering he is likely to be brought along quite slowly this season. Harris Tweed is highly tried in Group company, but finally came good in ideal conditions against under performing opponents to score on his seasonal reappearance. He is unlikely to improve on this better ground and I am keen to look elsewhere for my selection.
Next in the betting comes Arctic Cosmos and the more I look at him the more I begin to feel he was very fortunate to win a weak St Leger last season. Many of his rivals were not built for that test of stamina, which he adored. He was clearly made to look good on his return to the track this season at Kempton before a terrible performance in rain softened ground most recently at Newbury. He will need to show a lot more to be in with a shout here and if any rain does fall overnight, it will only weaken his claims.
The runner which catches my eye and loves this venue is TIMES UP, who seems to slowly but surely, improve with age. I am expecting a big season for him over staying distances and he can prove to be the underrated runner of the field with a strong performance here. He might not necessarily win on this reappearance, but if the eight runners do remain declared, I think he is a good bet to finish amongst the places at general odds of 13-2 with William Hill.
3.00 - Michael Seely Memorial Stakes (Listed) 1m
Prior to the 1000 Guineas, Godolphin looks to have a strong hand in the mile division with Discourse and Lyric Of Light. With stablemates of that ilk it is hardly surprising that TACTFULLY has no lofty entries, with the likelihood that she will be kept to Listed / Group 3 class for the foreseeable future.
If the rain does not arrive then she could be the one to cause a minor surprise, but I myself will not be placing any bets on the race until early afternoon on race day. Quick ground may prove vital.
