Saturday Ascot and Wetherby Selections

The fences are back and I am thankful for that after becoming tediously bored with flat racing since mid September. I finally had some willpower to focus myself readily on the racing form earlier this week ahead of some pretty entertaining action coming from both Ascot and Wetherby. Still there will be an issue of fitness for many entrants this afternoon and some trainers notoriously require a run from their horses before they show their best. However if we can avoid the ones attending the racecourse for a schooling session or a get-fit run we could  have a profitable day.

Sunday - One Bet

Sunday has arrived and a quiet day remains in prospect where watching rather than betting should ideally be the name of the game. However there is one horse I believe is priced up incorrectly and offers promise if fit enough to show his true capabilities this afternoon and it would be irrational of me to not at least explore the possibility of a bet in this situation.

Minor Bet - Lucky 15

At a time of year when jump horses are making their initial seasonal debuts and flat horses are plain old knackered it is difficult to feel confident about any bet. Therefore today I have taken some time out merely to plan for a Lucky 15 which will keep me entertained whilst I risk minimal stakes.

Best of luck if you join me!

It would be rude to ignore the new jumps season with Cheltenham hosting a early season meeting which offers some tremendous racing. One bet though for me as my funds are tied up on the flat and this will come in the form of EDGBRIAR in the 2.40 Handicap Chase (CLASS 2). A winner of this race last season he features here off a mark now only 1lb higher and his ability to run up the hill without needing the stick put to his hind quarters could hold him in good stead as he bids for back to back wins in the race. It is important that punters take notice of these new whip rules whilst they are currently in place. A small advantage may be obtainable before restrictions are rescinded later in the month.

Pundit Pointer:

2.40 Edgbriar (0.5pts EACH WAY @ 7-1 Victor Chandler)

Super Saturday - Qipco Champions Day

Well indeed I have kept myself to myself over the whip debate this week though I am firmly on the side of the jockeys as far as my Twitter comments are concerned. However today is a day when the whip issue will hopefully be forgotton and we can once again concentrate on what should be a superlative day of WORLD class flat racing as the season reaches it's finale on these shores.

Hopefully despite a lack of winners and blog updates in recent weeks there are enough people who know that I tend to come good when it is least expected and today would be a great day to find a few value price winners.

X-FACTOR - Sophie Habibis The Dark Horse

Regular readers of the blog bear with for I have not gone doolally. Instead I am merely writing up my latest projection of what I believe is a value priced winner and it just so happens that it comes in the current X Factor markets plastered across the Bookmaker and Odds Comparison websites.

I myself have already placed a MAXIMUM bet on the contender Sophie Habibis and I am under the opinion that it is still worthwhile for those who wish to bet, to do exactly the same and here is why....

One Bet Saturday

Not much for me to sink my teeth into today as the juveniles take centre stage in the Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1) and with the added complexities to deal with in a 36 runner Cesarewitch Handicap over 2m 2f I have woken up not feeling lucky and would rather not take my chance this afternoon at what tends to be a costly time of year on the betting front!

Away from Newmarket I am keen to side once more with a recent selection called ANCIENT CROSS. He paid out for those backing each way at Doncaster in the Portland when staying on well over the 5 1/2f distance to snatch fourth place in a blanket finish for the places.

Having formerly raced mainly over 7f in his younger days Ancient Cross has improved in recent times for the drop back to sprint trips. He has a decent draw this afternoon and should easily find cover for a late burst once more. He has a weight advantage with several former rivals who trade at much shorter odds and therefore gets the vote ahead of Son Of A Cat and Racy who both look set to run well in today's Coral's Sprint Trophy (Class 2) handicap contest which comes from York at 4.05.

Pundit Pointer:

4.05 - Ancient Cross (1pt WIN / 0.5pts PLACE @ 19-1 Betfair)

Epic Love For Prix de l'Opera

A disappointing result in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe saw an amazing run from the filly Danedream who I never even gave mention to in my race preview! German horses are so often inferior to both the French and British that I felt it was an unlikely result. It must however be said despite the lacklustre showing from Meandre that it was still a great race to watch!

Having done a historical check on the Prix de l'Opera (Group 1) I see it as a race for the taking if Epic Love can continue her upward curve. Having had an absence of just over two months she returned to the racetrack last time out to post a career best effort when just touched off by her rival Dream Peace.

That was a decent performance nonetheless and it appears she is developing into a smart prospect at the right end of the season where as others look to have already generally peaked. As a result I rate her as the best chance in the race and at appreciable odds of 8-1 she is a tempting and value play.

Pundit Pointer:

4.45 - Epic Love (2pts WIN @ 8-1 Bet365)

Longchamp Super Sunday

Having been out on the ale until the early hours last night I feel in a very delicate condition this morning but it is generally nothing some intense form reading cannot fix. For today is quite a brilliant day on the racing calendar and an enthralling Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe awaits us. I have used my time and energy and looked back to the late 80's for clues and statistics and slowly but surely I am getting more confident about my choice.

Saturday Racing Picks

Having changed my ISP this week I have had limited time to review the racing for Saturday and am inclined to keep myself fresh ready to analyse the form for what looks a terrific day at Longchamp on Sunday. However I have still managed to conclude that there are two in the big races with live chances but I am not writing a full report on these this morning.

My ASCOT bets are:

3.15 - Elzaam

This horse has posted creditable efforts in Group 1 company on his last three outings but is very closely matched with both War Artist and Genki. It could well prove that there will be some improvement with Richard Hill's being summoned elsewhere and under the reins of Tadhg O'Shea this horse could be due to find sufficient improvement to run out a very close winner of this race. Quickening ground will play to his strengths and if the selection can keep tabs on the early pace he should be running on very strongly at the finish.

Best Odds 9-2 Sportingbet

3.50 - Hawkeyethenoo

A competitive 18 runner heritage handicap over 7f is expected here and this horse could be due to strike after lackluster performances the last twice in softer ground. Judged on his win over C&D in May he is not as fearsomely handicapped as some would expect. Infact the handicapper has failed to lower his current mark despite these two efforts under the knowledge that this horse needs quick ground to be seen at his best. Also important here is the booking of Kieren Fallon who rides well very often when summoned as jockey for Jim Goldie. He has ridden the horse twice previously and his form record reads a respectable first and third placing. He is well drawn and will appreciate every inch of this 7f test. Big player.

Best Odds 8-1 Bet365

Maybe feel lucky and try the double!

I do not want to advise a staking plan as I have not spent enough time to determine each horses value. I would not overstake as there is alot of decent racing on tomorrow as well.
