McCoy going for one at Haydock

In the Class 2 Betfred Daffodil Vase Chase at Haydock today Tony McCoy makes the trip for just one ride aboard the promising Saphir Des Bois.

Looking at the race is does look quite open but at the current prices I do not see the favourite as good value. Salut Flo has gone up 14lbs in the handicap for a win last time on good going. It will be as heavy as it has been at Haydock for many years today so on that basis alone, 5-2 is terrible value for an unproven horse.

There will be a fair amount of pace in the race as many of these like to race prominently but Saphir Des Bois seems adaptable looking at past form so could well stay just off the pace and be cajoled by McCoy late on.

Expect a gamble, partly as it is his only ride of the day and get on as early as possible. Ignore the race at Cheltenham as the course did not suit and the trip was too far. This 2m 4f trip should prove ideal and heavy ground is what this selection craves.

Ruby Walsh also rides just one for the day with Fistral Beach in opposition. This will probably receive backing enough to go off favourite by race-time but is not one to trust as it has failed to win several times this season when being well supported.
